Project financed through the call "Innovative Business Groups 2023" of the State Research Agency (Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism) and the European Union NextGenerationEU / PRTR.
LOCALVINO is a research project that has been carried out during the years 2022 and 2023 by a consortium made up of different companies, research centers and organizations from Catalonia and Aragon. It focuses on studying the applicability of Blockchain and IoT (Internet of Things) technologies to the wine production chain, with the aim of avoiding possible food fraud that can occur throughout the process.
The importance of the application of Industry 4.0 (IoT and Blockchain) to the certification process has a double side. On the one hand, it provides certainty and robust traceability to each of the processes carried out in the field and in the warehouse, redundant in a considerable increase in the reliability of the audit to verify compliance with the requirements contemplated in the specifications. On the other hand, the technologies provide the operator with maximum efficiency and effectiveness in the minimum annual audit process. The initial objective is specified in the study of the possibility that blockchain allows the creation of digital records that enable different agents of a peer-to-peer network to exchange information directly, thus being able to have the certification of the contents that have been including, its immutable nature, its encryption and linking of the preparation and certification processes.
During the first two phases, grape production processes and their control at the source, as well as must production, have been investigated. The key points to implement effective control throughout the process have been identified and the weaknesses in the control that is currently carried out in different regions of the Spanish wine map have been detected.
This information has served us to validate the capacity of the technologies studied for the verification and certification of data in the value chain. The results have been very satisfactory and, based on these, this third phase has been reconsidered, focusing the objective on three fundamental aspects:
Incorporate complex processes such as the purchase of wine between suppliers into traceability.
Extend the learnings obtained in Phase 2 to all traceability in a warehouse.
Study the interoperability of the Blockchain system with other warehouse management systems.
Increase the operation time of Phase 1 IoT devices for the location of the harvest.
