Water foodprint calculation

Development of a standard tool for controlling the water footprint of catalan wineries

Project supported and financed by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (MINECO) within the support program for AEI to contribute to improving the competitiveness of Spanish industry.

The main objective of the project is to position the wine sector as an innovative international benchmark in terms of sustainability, through the development of a software tool to calculate the water footprint that allows the optimization of energy and water flows in the production process of the wines. This tool can be considered a clear example of a project linked to Industry 4.0. of the wine manufacturing sector through the development and implementation of an ICT application and solution in the sector's value chain.

The development of this project entails the following associated technical-scientific objectives:

  • Automate the entry of data referenced to energy and water flows.
  • Develop a computer support system tool for decision-making and optimization of energy and water flows.
  • Facilitate the calculation process for the knowledge of the Water Footprint of the entire wine production cycle.
  • Reduce the consumption of water and energy in the production process of wines and sparkling wines.
  • Disseminate the results in the sector, to generalize the use of the tool, openly involving the entire sector through sectorial dissemination, accessible through the web, specific dissemination sessions and articles.
