Background

The European wine sector is at a turning point, where sustainability, climate resilience, and reduced chemical inputs are essential to ensure its long-term viability. New environmental regulations, changing consumer demands, and the effects of climate change require transforming the traditional production model to reduce environmental impact without compromising wine quality.

In this context, LIGAWINE promotes the transition towards low-input viticulture and winemaking, fostering technological innovation, digitalization, and interregional cooperation as key tools for a more sustainable future.

Objectives

The main goal of LIGAWINE is to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable, efficient, and resilient wine sector, through the adoption of low-input practices and the transfer of innovative technological solutions.

Specific objectives include:

  • Reduce the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, promoting biological and regenerative alternatives.
  • Improve energy and water efficiency in wine production.
  • Develop digital and precision technologies to optimize agronomic and oenological processes.
  • Promote interregional cooperation and knowledge exchange among European wine regions.
  • Create a demonstrative framework of best practices to facilitate adoption by SMEs and cooperatives.

Actions to be developed:

The project starts with the mapping of existing best practices and “low-input” technologies in viticulture and winemaking across Europe, analysing their transferability and adaptation to different climatic and geographic conditions.

Collaboration will later be promoted through a European network for sustainable wine innovation, enabling knowledge exchange, validation of solutions, and the creation of new cooperation and investment opportunities.

The proposed activities, grouped into work packages (WP), focus on:

  • Identifying and validating sustainable technologies for reducing chemical inputs, optimizing resources, and improving process efficiency in vineyards and wineries.
  • Deploying pilot projects in various regions to demonstrate the positive impact of low-input practices.
  • Fostering digitalization and smart monitoring of viticultural and oenological processes using sensors, data, and artificial intelligence.
  • Promoting training and knowledge transfer among companies, research centres, and European clusters.
  • Disseminating and showcasing results through events, publications, and open-access tools for the sector.
