CORCHACTIVO

Feasibility of the application of the by-products of the wine cork industry as active substrates in vegetation

Grant from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism for support for Innovative Business Groups.

This project aims to study the suitability of a green cover made with cork by-products generated during the manufacture of cork stoppers and / or in the vinification process.
The activity proposed in this project consists of demonstrating the use of cork as a substrate and / or support for green roofs. In the case of green roofs, as in the case of wetlands, cork can be applied as a substrate and allow the decontamination of wastewater from buildings, as well as improve its energy efficiency thanks to the insulating properties of the material.
The main objective of the demonstration activity is the transfer of the knowledge obtained in the design of the system described to the potential beneficiaries of the agri-food sector so that the diffusion and consequent application allows them:

  • Improving the efficiency of water management of agri-food facilities (mainly wineries) through the application of a green roof.
  • Improving the energy efficiency of agri-food facilities through the application of a vegetation cover.
  • To improve the economic and environmental performance of the cork forest sector, by using the by-product of the agri-food industry itself.
