VIPO F2: Training tool based on virtual reality

Info Innovi,

Project financed through the call "Innovative Business Groups 2023" of the State Research Agency (Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism) and the European Union NextGenerationEU / PRTR.

Based on the opinions and metrics collected in the previous phase by the tests with expert users, in this second phase of the VIPO project the scalability of the system will be consolidated, both in terms of training content and in the improvement in realistic aspects of themselves The first phase of the project made it possible to achieve a training tool based on Virtual Reality that was functional and representative of the pruning methodology. At the same time, a previous online theoretical part was created that responded to the training needs related to the pruning process for personnel without knowledge on the subject. This is the basis with which we will start the second phase.

On this occasion, with the same idea of facilitating access to training on respectful pruning through an attractive technology such as Virtual Reality, a research component is being strengthened aimed at offering a projection of the future of the strains once pruned. To achieve this, data collection methodologies will be implemented with an initial weekly frequency, based on the concepts of photogrammetry, with the aim of having a large number of images of different strains taken in an orderly manner and from similar angles, to build a visual database (dataset) on which to work with algorithms that will infer what the vegetative growth of the vine would be like.

Other factors to be considered at the level of relevant data from different sources are meteorological stations, sensors in the field or technical and theoretical knowledge of the viticulture staff (expert users), which reinforce the objectives of the next developments, eventually aimed at the generation of intelligent predictive models intelligent integrable in Augmented Reality systems.

This Augmented Reality will eventually make it possible to work on the real vineyard and, based on the metrics obtained in previous phases and extensive tests with users, apply vectors to improve, for example, the cuts to be made according to the initial objectives (protect the strain, improve productivity, etc.). It is an unknown field in which different technologies are intertwined (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data) and which has a high degree of uncertainty, since the vintages are all different.

The ability to make future projections from data obtained by sensors in the field will reduce the effects of climate change, increasing the ability to anticipate, and also greatly facilitate the learning of the working people who have the need to hire the wineries. Another point that will significantly improve the competitiveness of companies, both those that offer training and those that need it, will be the foray into the training pilot platform that will be implemented, still in an experimental phase, to see the possibilities at the IT level to provide Virtual Reality training from a single location without losing the benefits and criteria established during phase 1 of the project.
