For wine bottles to be reused, they need to travel efficiently to washing facilities. The REVICAT project analyses production and consumption flows in Catalonia to map out a reuse model that is both viable and environmentally beneficial.
To create this map, the project acquired provincial consumption data for wines from each designation of origin (DO). Combined with production locations, these data provide a clearer picture of where bottles are distributed and what route they would need to take to return to the system.
This analysis will help determine where washing facilities should be located and what capacity they should have. The aim is to optimise the logistics of collecting, washing and redistributing bottles, strengthening the system’s economic viability and maximising its environmental benefits.
The REVICAT: Mapping the Bottle Reuse Model in Catalonia project is led by a consortium comprising the Catalan Wine Association and INNOVI, with support from the Waste Agency of Catalonia through its 2024 call for grants to promote the circular economy.
